♦ Biol. Se dit des organismes qui vivent dans des conditions optimales à des températures élevées (supérieures à 55 °C). — N. m. Des thermophiles.

● thermophile adjectif Se dit des micro-organismes capables de vivre à une température élevée (50-70 °C). [On a découvert dans les abysses océaniques des thiobactériales capables de se multiplier activement à une température de 250 °C sous une très forte pression (265 atmosphères).]
